The 1989 379 Peterbilt Sleeper is a big rig truck used by commercial truck drivers across the word daily. Just like passenger cars and trucks, these large vehicles require basic essential repairs and maintenance in order to keep running properly. If the battery and ignition both test OK but the rig will not start, there is a good chance the vehicle's starter needs to be removed so that a new one can be wired up.
Instructions
- 1
Flip the hood latches on both side of the rig's hood to the "down" position. Pull the hood backward, toward the front of the vehicle, until it is in the "open" position. Secure the hood safety cable.
2Use the adjustable wrench to remove the negative battery cable. Set the cable aside.
3Locate the starter on the left-hand side firewall, inside the engine compartment.
4Remove the terminal screws and disconnect the wire leads running from the battery and ground to the starter.
5Remove the bolts holding the old starter in place with the socket set. Hold a new starter in place and bolt it down with the socket set.
6Insert the wires to the proper terminals on the new starter. Tighten them with a screwdriver.
7Replace the vehicle's negative battery cable. Unfasten the hood safety rope, wind it up and store it. Lower the hood and then the hood latches.
