In 1976, Honda expanded its lineup, which consisted of just the Civic at the time, with the addition of the mid-sized Accord. With the Accord, Honda gave customers a fuel-efficient vehicle that came with standard features not common for its era, including an AM/FM radio. The 1991 Accord -- just one year after Honda released the fourth generation Accord -- came standard with an AM/FM radio, but had a cassette player included on its LX trim level.
Instructions
- 1
Open the Accord's hood and loosen the negative battery cable from the battery, using a combination wrench. Pull the negative cable off the battery.
Remove the manual transmission knob, if equipped, by twisting it counterclockwise until it's free from the shift lever.
Locate the end-cap -- the small square plastic piece -- on the rearmost part of the center console. Insert the blade of a flat-head screwdriver under the end-cap and pry the end-cap from the center console.
Remove the center console-retaining screw under where the end-cap was, using a Phillips screwdriver. Remove the two screws where the front and rear parts of the center console meet, using a Phillips screwdriver.
Pull the rear section of the center console rearward until it is free of the center console's front section. Unplug any electrical connections on the rear part of the center console -- the number of plug depends on the Accord's options.
Remove the two screws securing the cassette case in the front part of the center console, using a Phillips screwdriver. Pull the cassette box from the center console.
Remove the remaining five screws securing the front part of the center console -- two on the horizontal part and three on the vertical part -- using a Phillips screwdriver. Pull the front part of the center console from the vehicle. If fitted with a manual transmission, slide the shifter boot up the shift lever, as you remove the center console.
Pull out the ashtray. Press down and hold the metal tab on the top of the ashtray, then pull the ashtray from the dashboard. Remove the three screws holding the ashtray mount to the dashboard, and pull the mount from the dashboard.
Look through the hole where the ashtray mount once was to locate the two bolts securing the radio to the vehicle -- on the rear of the radio. Remove the radio-retaining bolts, using a ratchet, 6-inch extension and a socket.
Slide the radio from the Accord's dashboard until you can access the electrical connections on the rear of the radio. Press the locking button on the radio wiring harness and pull the harness from the rear of the radio. Grab the antenna wire -- the thick black wire -- and pull it from the radio, using a slight twisting motion.
Pull the radio and pocket -- one assembly -- from the Accord.
Plug the antenna wire into the receptacle on the rear of the new radio. Press the radio wiring harness back into the rear of the radio until it clicks into place.
Slide the new radio and pocket into the dashboard until the radio is flush with the dashboard. Tighten the two radio-retaining bolts into the rear of the radio, using a ratchet, socket and 6-inch extension.
Reinstall the ashtray mount onto the underside of the dashboard and tighten its three screws with a Phillips screwdriver.
Set the front part of the center console back into place. If equipped with a manual transmission, guide the shifter boot over the shifter lever. Tighten the five front-most screws, using a Phillips screwdriver. Place the cassette box back in the hole in the front portion of the center console and tighten its two screws with a Phillips screwdriver.
Plug any electrical connections into the rear part of the center console -- the amount and type of connections depends on the Accord's optional equipment. Set the rear part of the center console in place, guiding the tabs on the rear part of the console into the slots on the front part of the console.
Tighten the two screws where the front and rear sections of the center console come together and the screw under where the end-cap goes, using a Phillips screwdriver. Press the end-cap back into place on the rear of the center console.
Reconnect the negative battery cable and tighten it with a combination wrench.
