How to Remove the Radiator in a 2001 Blazer

The engine of your 2001 Blazer requires a cooling system to operate properly, and one of the main parts in that system is the radiator. Over time, corrosion, damage from impacts and accidents can impair the radiator's ability to cool effectively. When this happens, the best way to fix it is to remove and replace the radiator,.

Instructions

    1

Allow the engine to cool for at least five hours prior to working on the cooling system--otherwise you could burn yourself. Then place a drain pan underneath the radiator, open the petcock on the bottom of the radiator, and allow the coolant to drain into the pan.

    2

Unbolt the upper radiator shroud from the core support using the 3/8-inch ratchet, extension and socket. If you have air conditioning installed on the truck, you'll have to move one of the hoses to get the shroud out. Make sure not to disconnect any air conditioning lines, as they are under pressure.

    3

Disconnect the oil cooler lines from the driver's side of the radiator if your Blazer is so equipped, using the line wrench set. Then use the pliers or a flat head screwdriver to remove the hose clamps on the upper and lower radiator hoses, then pull the hoses away from the radiator. Allow the coolant to drain into the pan.

    4

Grip the radiator at the sides and lift it straight up towards the hood, trying not to tilt it in the process.
