The Denso 471-1391 air compressor comes on the Suzuki XL-7, and it seldom malfunctions, but if it does, you need to replace it. The air conditioning system must be opened to the atmosphere, and you cannot evacuate Freon into the atmosphere. Take the vehicle to a shop or dealership with a reclaimer to remove the Freon. You can then change the compressor yourself, then have a shop refill the system with refrigerant.

Instructions

    1

Disconnect the negative battery cable, using the appropriate wrench. Unplug the compressor clutch electrical connector by pulling the tangs away from the plug and pulling the socket apart.

    2

Disconnect the hoses at the back of the air compressor, using the appropriate socket. The hoses are attached to a manifold, which is bolted to the compressor. If the O-rings stick to the manifold, remove the O-rings and discard them.

    3

Loosen the compressor-mounting bolts on the G16 engine to loosen tension on the belt. Remove the belt. If you have a J20 engine, loosen the adjusting bolt on the generator, then lift the belt off the pulleys. On the H25 engine, loosen the tensioner pulley bolt to loosen tension on the belt. Lift the belt off the pulleys.

    4

Unbolt and remove the air compressor. Pour the oil from the old compressor into a measuring cup to measure the amount of oil the compressor holds. Write down the amount, then discard the oil and clean the measuring cup.

    5

Pour the appropriate amount of oil into the new compressor, using the measurement from the old oil. Never use old oil in a new compressor --- always use clean, new oil. Stand the compressor up on the clutch for 10 minutes so that the oil penetrates the seals.

    6

Install the compressor on the G16 engine by installing the compressor onto its bracket. Install the drive belt. Connect the air conditioning hoses to the compressor. Tighten the drive belt by tightening the compressor-mounting bolts to 17 foot-pounds of torque.

    7

Install the compressor on the J20 engine by installing the compressor onto the bracket and tightening the bolts to 17 foot-pounds of torque. Connect the air conditioning hoses to the compressor. Reinstall the generator belt.

    8

Install the compressor on the H25 engine by installing the compressor onto its bracket and tightening the bolts to 17 foot-pounds of torque. Reattach the hoses and reinstall the belt.

    9

Reconnect the negative battery cable. Drive the vehicle to a certified shop or dealership to vacuum and recharge the air conditioning system.
