How to Rebuild an Allis Carburetor

As a tractor carburetor, the Allis carburetor follows the same general design as other carburetors, being activated by a throttle cable and attached at the intake manifold. Rebuilding the unit essentially involves removing it, taking the unit apart, cleaning it, and replacing gaskets upon rebuild. The process is not hard, but the parts do need to be taken apart and rebuilt in the right sequence.

Instructions

    1

Locate the control arms that actuate the tractor carburetors mechanisms. Turn off the fuel flow to the unit. Disconnect the arms via their spring-loaded hooks.

    2

Use a screwdriver to loosen the air filter clamps on the carburetor. Remove the filter hose. Locate the nuts that secure the carburetor to the engine intake manifold. Loosen these with a crescent wrench. Pull the carburetor free.

    3

Set the unit on a workbench. Use a screwdriver to loosen and remove all the external needles and parts such as the idle needle, air/fuel mix needle, the throttle cable, etc. Please the loose parts in a cup so as not to lose them.

    4

Disassemble the various parts bolted to the carburetor body. Use a plastic scraper to remove old gasket material from the mating surfaces of the parts. Use crescent wrenches to loosen the bolts holding the carburetor parts together. Open up the float bowl underneath the carburetor to expose the main jet assemblies.

    5

Use a screwdriver to loosen and remove the jet assemblies. Spray everything down with carb cleaner solvent. Wash all the parts and then let the air dry on the work table.

    6

Open up a carburetor rebuild kit for the model carburetor you have. Begin to rebuild the carburetor, reversing the previous steps and inserting new gaskets as you rebuild the carburetor. Tighten all the parts hardware together, but dont over-tighten the nuts.

    7

Check the cup that you didnt leave any parts behind in the reassembly. Install the needles and screw them into the carburetor body until seated. Back them outward again at least two and half turns (you will need to adjust them further again to tune the carburetor with the tractor engine running).

    8

Re-position the rebuilt carburetor back into the tractor and onto the engine intake manifold. Bolt it tight again with a new gasket. Attach the air filter hose and tighten the clamp. Connect the throttle cable again to the carburetor. Attach the fuel line.

    9

Turn on the tractor engine and adjust the carburetor needles until the engine idle runs at normal speed.
