Vintage Camaro seats often absorb damage because of the way you enter and exit the vehicle. In particular, you'll find that the bottom seat bolster of the vinyl or cloth seat on the driver's side of the car nearest the door will be threadbare and the padding underneath will be in tatters. Fortunately, aftermarket companies produce not only replacement seat covers, but also seat padding that slips easily into place.
Instructions
- 1
Unbolt the Camaro seat in need of repair from the floor pan of the car using the socket wrench. Camaro seats are connected to the floor by four nuts connected to threaded bolts that are fastened to the floor.
2Lift the seat up and out of the car and then place it on a surface where you can work comfortably.
3Remove the metal sliding mechanism from the bottom of the seat with the socket wrench. It doesn't have to be disassembled; you can simply unbolt it from the seat frame.
4Unbolt the seat back from the seat base. The bolt for this step is located just under the seat back padding where the seat back meets the seat base.
5Remove the hog rings from the underside of the seat base, noting where and how they're connected. This is necessary to know when you put the seat back together. Remove the hog rings from the underside of the seat back.
6Peel off the old seat covering material of the seat back and seat base by pulling it up from where the hog rings were located, and drawing it over the foam padding of the seat.
7Remove the seat foam from the frame of the seat. On older cars, the seat foam may be stuck between the springs of the seat. Break it up to remove it.
8Position the replacement seat foam onto the seat base first, being certain to face the foam the right way. It will taper off slightly toward one end. This end is the back of the seat. Next, turn the replacement seat base vinyl or cloth cover inside out.
9Spray the foam pad with a light coat of upholstery adhesive spray, and then lay the flat portion of the seat base on top of the foam pad so that the underside of the cloth sticks to the foam pad. Fold the sides and front of the seat vinyl or cloth down over the sides of the foam pad, then attach it to the frame of the seat with hog rings.
10Align the seat foam over the frame of the seat back, then turn the seat back so that it's inside-out.
11Spray the foam of the seat back with upholstery adhesive spray. Run the cloth or vinyl seat cover down over the foam. This is done by pressing the underside of the headrest in place and then rolling the seat cover down over the seat foam, carefully guiding the seat bolsters in place until the seat cover is correctly positioned over the foam.
12Secure the seat back cover to the bottom frame of the seat back with hog rings, then bolt the seat back and seat base together before installing the seats in the Camaro. The process is the same for both the driver and passenger side of the vehicle.
