Heater cores are necessary for having heat inside the car. Heater cores are found inside the air pipes, which is right below the control panel of the car. Sometimes the heater cannot work properly because of the dusts that cover the heater core. Also, old heaters can have leaks, making it difficult to get the heat inside the car. Installing a heater core is not a difficult task to do. With few necessary tools, anyone can install a heater core on a 1985 Thunderbird.

Heater Core Removal

Take the car to a service shop to have the air conditioning system evacuated.
2Disconnect the negative battery cable lines from the car. Remove the wires from the blower motor.
3Place the drain container under the radiator plug. Turn the radiator plug with the pair of pliers. Open the radiator cap. Drain the coolant from the radiator. Close the radiator plug with the pliers.
4Place the drain container under the engine block. Turn the plug on the block with the pliers. Drain the coolant.
5Open the reservoir with a socket and ratchet.
6Detach the end part of the heater pipe. Remove the clamps from the heater pipe with flat-head screwdriver.
7Unscrew and open the bottom part of car instrument control panel. Use a Phillips screwdriver to unscrew and pull off the panel. Disconnect the resistor wires from the blower motor.
8Disconnect the vacuum lines to the blower motor housing.
9Cut off the heater controller line. Cut the plastic band located between the blower motor and heater core housing.
10Loosen the nuts from the firewall at the side of the engine. Pull the blower housing from the car. Unscrew the heater core from the car. Use Phillips screwdriver to unscrew.

Place the heater core inside the housing.
12Attach the heater to the vehicle. Tighten the nuts with socket and ratchet. Connect the vacuum pipes to the vacuum motor. Tighten the nuts with socket and ratchet.
13Reinstall the blower motor connector to the blower motor.
14Connect electrical lines to the instrument panel. Tighten the screws with Phillips screwdriver. Attach the instrument panel to the car. Tighten the screws on left and right side of the instrument panel with Phillips screwdriver. Use a socket and ratchet to tighten the bolts.
15Attach the heater pipes with Phillips screwdriver. Install the coolant reservoir. Connect the negative battery lines again. Fill with engine coolant.
