The most important component of the 1994 Mustang's cooling system is its radiator. As the radiator coolant travels throughout the engine, its carries with it heat produced by the engine and directs that heat to the top of the radiator. The coolant then trickles down a series of passageways in the radiator, where it is cooled before returning to the engine via the bottom radiator hose. If the passageways become clogged, the radiator's effectiveness will diminish and it must be removed and either repaired or replaced.
Instructions
- 1
Remove the negative battery cable from the battery with a wrench to avoid the possibility of the radiator fan inadvertently turning on.
2Twist the radiator cap off of the top of the radiator after allowing the engine to cool.
3Drain the radiator coolant into a container by removing the bolt at the base of the radiator with a wrench. Ensure that the container is clean if the coolant will be reused.
4Slacken the clamps that secure the upper and lower radiator hoses to the radiator with pliers and pull the hoses off of the radiator.
5Disconnect the two cooler lines from the bottom of the radiator with a flare nut wrench if the Mustang is equipped with automatic transmission. Rotate the integral nut on the end of each line in a counterclockwise direction with the wrench.
6Remove the two bolts that secure the overflow tank to the engine compartment with a socket wrench. Lift the tank out of the engine compartment.
7Disconnect the electric fan's wiring connector from the Mustang's wiring harness by pressing the two release tabs together on the connector and pulling the connector out of the harness.
8Remove the bolts that secure the fan assembly to the back of the radiator with a socket wrench.
9Lift the fan assembly out of the engine compartment.
10Remove the screws that secure the radiator's plastic cover to the top of the radiator with a screwdriver and lift the cover off of the radiator.
11Remove the bolts that secure the top of the radiator to the engine compartment with a wrench and lift the radiator out of the engine compartment.
