The radiator is an important part of the BMW 530I's cooling system. The coolant flows through a series of tubes within the radiator casing and cool the liquid down so that it can help prevent the engine from overheating. The engine coolant zigzags through the tubes and use the outside air, along with air from the cooling fan to cool the hot liquid. It is not difficult to change a radiator, and you can finish the project in your driveway or garage in about 45 minutes.

Instructions

    1

Make sure the engine is cool before you start the project. Remove the engine under-cover using a screwdriver. Loosen the bleeder screw on top of the radiator using the screwdriver. Open the valve on the bottom of the radiator with a wrench and drain the coolant into the drain pan. Put the container out of reach of children and pets until you are able to take it to an approved recycling center.

    2

Disconnect the upper radiator hose using a screwdriver to loosen the hose clamp. There will be some coolant flowing from the hose so you will want to catch it with the drain pan. Disconnect the temperature switch by removing it from the radiator. Remove the lower radiator hose by loosening the hose clamp with the screwdriver. Catch the fluid with the drain pan.

    3

Remove the fasteners attaching the fan cowl to the radiator. Remove the transmission cooling lines using a wrench if your BMW has an automatic transmission. Plug the transmission cooling lines with the transmission line plugs. Release the radiator securing clips by inserting a screwdriver into the slot and releasing the clip. Pull the radiator from the engine compartment.

    4

Install the new radiator and secure it by locking the clips into place. Connect the transmission cooling lines and tighten them with a wrench if your BMW has the automatic transmission. Install the fan cowl and secure it by tightening the screws with a screwdriver. Connect the lower radiator hose and tighten the clamp with the screwdriver. Connect the upper radiator hose and tighten the clamp with the screwdriver.

    5

Connect the temperature switch to the radiator. Open the bleeder valve on the radiator. Fill the radiator and reservoir with fresh coolant. Pour the coolant in the radiator until the fluid starts to come out of the bleeder valve. Install the engine under cover and tighten the screws with the screwdriver. Start the BMW and check the new radiator for leaks around the hoses and transmission cooling lines.
