How to Buy Auto Glass

After a break-in or automobile accident, you're thinking about how to get your car back on the road and not about glass quality. But the wrong glass for your car could get damaged down the road, shattering in a bad accident, warns Glass.net. Understand the different types of auto glass and choose the best quality you can afford, since glass is above all a safety feature of your car.

Instructions

    1

Visit your car's dealer to buy auto glass that is certified for your car and has your car's make (i.e., Toyota or Ford) stamped on it. Car dealers carry auto glass that is certified as "OEM," or original equipment manufactured, and specific to your type of car.

    2

Call local auto repair shops and ask whether they carry "OEM" auto glass. Unlike the glass carried by your dealer--which is brand specific--"OEM" glass from an auto repair shop is certified to be the same cut and thickness as your car's auto glass but does not carry brand identification. For example, Acura "OEM" auto glass won't bear the Acura logo but it will feature the same measurements, tint and shape as the dealer glass in your Acura, so there won't be any mismatching. Arrange for an auto repair shop to install "OEM" auto glass, then pay for the glass and labor afterward.

    3

Visit an auto glass shop to purchase cheaper "OEE," or original equipment equivalent glass, if you're on a budget. "OEE" glass (sometimes called aftermarket glass) does not bear the same size, thickness, color and quality as the "OEM" glass and should only be used as a last resort.

    4

Comparison shop for prices by calling several auto repair shops or auto glass dealers if you plan to buy "OEM" or "OEE" glass. Then purchase from a glass provider that offers a good price and timely installation to get your car up and running again.
