Honda automobiles are manufactured with rear disc brakes on some models. This hydraulic caliper, rotor and pad system can wear out and require the replacement of some parts to function correctly. This is not a very difficult fix, and the average backyard mechanic can replace the rear pads on a Honda in about an hour.
Instructions
- 1
Raise the Honda at the rear wheel where the brake pads are to be replaced by positioning the jack head onto the frame rail and pumping the lever to get the wheel off of the ground.
2Remove the wheel by turning the lug nuts counterclockwise, then placing the wheel away from the car.
3Remove the caliper by turning the rear mount bolts in a counterclockwise direction, then sliding the caliper off of the rotor.
4Remove the pads from the caliper pistons by pulling them free, or prying them loose with a screwdriver. Dirt or debris can build up around the pistons, sticking the pads to them.
5Replace the pads with fresh units by pressing them into position onto the caliper pistons.
6Replace the caliper by sliding it onto the rotor, then turning its rear mount bolts clockwise until they are snug.
7Replace the wheel by turning the lug nuts clockwise, in an alternating pattern.
8Lower the Honda from the floor jack by turning the pressure screw on the jack base counterclockwise. Remove the jack.
9Repeat the entire process on the opposite brake.
