The transfer case speed sensors on a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado monitor the speed of the transfer case propeller shaft and send that information to the powertrain control module, or PCM. The PCM uses this information to make decisions about how to manage the powertrain and to perform continuous checks to ensure all powertrain systems are operating at maximum efficiency. 2003 Chevrolet Silverados come equipped with four transfer case options, some of which have multiple speed sensors. Regardless of the specific location of the transfer case speed sensors, the replacement procedure is the same once a specific sensor is selected for repair.

Instructions

Removal

    1

Shift the transmission into park or first gear for manual transmissions. Apply the parking brake and turn off the engine. Open the hood and disconnect the negative battery terminal. Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.

    2

Lift the front of the truck using an automotive jack, and support the front with jack stands. Crawl underneath the truck and locate the transfer case speed sensor you want to replace. The sensors either are on the front, left rear or right rear of the transfer case depending upon your exact configuration.

    3

Disconnect the sensors electrical connector and remove it using a metric deep well socket and a ratchet.

Installation

    4

Install the new sensor in the transfer case and torque it to 11 foot-pounds using a torque wrench and a metric deep well socket.

    5

Connect the sensors electrical connector and exit from underneath the vehicle. Raise the vehicle using the automotive jack and remove the jack stands. Lower the vehicle to the ground and remove the wheel chocks.

    6

Connect the negative battery terminal using a battery terminal wrench. Test drive the vehicle to confirm it operates properly.
