A bad fuel pump relay won't prevent your 1996 Chevrolet S-10 from firing up, but if it takes several extra cranks to get the engine started, there's a good possibility that the fuel pump relay is the culprit. Under normal conditions, the fuel pump relay primes the fuel pump soon after switching on the ignition, which allows the fuel system to pressurize before you engage the engine's starter. If the relay isn't working, the oil pressure switch will engage the fuel pump after cranking the engine enough to meet the required oil pressure. Replacing a defective fuel pump relay will shorten crank times, thereby reducing premature wear and tear on the starter.

Instructions

    1

Open the glove compartment and empty the contents. Pop off the rectangular Relay Access cover located at the rear of the glove compartment with your fingers or a flat-head screwdriver.

    2

Grasp the leftmost relay and pull it from the connector. Wiggle the relay back and forth to unseat it from the connector, if necessary.

    3

Insert the replacement fuel pump relay into the connector's terminals. Press the relay firmly into place with your thumb to make sure it's seated. Reinstall the relay access cover.
