The 2000 Ford Explorer was the second-to-last model of the mid-sized SUVs second generation, with a significant re-design already in the works when the 2000 models rolled off the assembly line. One characteristic of the second generation was the center dash control panel, which provided occupants easy control of the stereo, rear wipers, environment control and defroster, all from one convenient location. This intuitive design proved successful with Explorer owners and carried on to the third generation. Another bonus of the design was the ease of removal and replacement of any component in the control panel.

Instructions

    1

Pry the center control panel bezel off the dashboard, using the trim tool. Set the dash bezel aside.

    2

Remove the hex-head screws holding the defroster switch to the dash frame, using the socket wrench and 6-mm socket.

    3

Pull the switch out of the dash, far enough to gain access to the wiring connector plugged into the back of the switch. Depress the wiring connector retaining tab and pull the wiring connector out of the defroster switch. Set the old switch aside.

    4

Plug the wiring connector into the new defroster switch. Slide the switch into the dashboard frame. Thread the retaining screws in by hand, and then tighten them with the socket wrench and 6-mm socket.

    5

Align the dash bezel with the mounting holes in the dash frame. Push firmly on the bezel to snap the bezel in place; you may need to pound on the bezel with the base of your palm to fully lock it in.
