The power window motor on a 1998 Ford F-150 can be removed separately from the window regulator. Power window motor failure is often due to increased resistance to the movement of the glass. This is due to the condition of the window felt in the channels or their alignment. A test of the window movement with the motor removed will reveal any problems. Many times a Ford window motor failure is due to a plastic bushing failure in the gear housing. Bushing kits are very simple to replace and inexpensive.

Instructions

Removal

    1

Pull off the sail panel at the top forward edge of the door panel covering the attachment point for the side view mirror. Remove the Phillips screw beneath the sail cover with the Phillips screwdriver. Unplug the side view mirror connector. Lift up on the forward end of the window regulator panel and pull it out of the door panel. Use the small flathead screwdriver to assist in the removal of the electrical plugs.

    2

Remove the Phillips screw found below the window regulator panel. Use the small flathead screwdriver to carefully pry out the cover behind the inside door handle. Remove the bolt under the cover with a socket. Pull the door handle forward to release it.

    3

Pry the marker light lens out of the panel and remove the bolt beneath it with a socket and ratchet. Lift the door panel up to release the inverted hooks behind the door panel securing it to the door. Move the panel away from the door just a little and remove the marker light socket from behind the panel with a little twist and pull.

    4

Peel the moisture shield back exposing the window motor. Unplug the window motor electrical connector. Push the window to the full up position and tape it with masking tape to keep it from falling once you remove the motor.

    5

Drill out the two dimples located over the motor bolts using the 1/2-inch drill. Remove the three bolts securing the motor to the regulator using a socket and ratchet. Pull the motor toward the outside of the door to release it from the mechanism.

Installation

    6

Install the replacement window motor by angling the motor upward slightly as it is being installed. Lower the motor as it meshes with the regulator gears. Install the three bolts to secure the window to the regulator.

    7

Place some paint on the holes drilled to prevent rust. Plug the motor electrical connector into the harness. Position the moisture shield in place. Remove the tape.

    8

Hold the door panel close to the door and install the marker lamp socket. Plug in the side view mirror connection. Lift the door panel slightly higher than the door and bring it down against the door to hook the sill. Make sure the inverted hooks enter the holes in the door as the panel is lowered.

    9

Install the bolt behind the marker lens cover. Install the lens by snapping it in. Install the Phillips screw below the window regulator panel opening. Push the electrical plugs into the underside of the window regulator switch panel. Install the panel rear first and push the front down snap in place.

    10

Install the inside door handle and the retaining bolt using a socket and ratchet. Install the plastic concealment cover behind the handle. Install the Phillips screw in the top forward part of the door panel under the sail panel. Push the sail panel behind the side view mirror into place.
