The 1987 E-150 was equipped with a 4.9-liter V-6 as the base model engine. A 5.0-liter V-8 and 5.8-liter Windsor V-8 were optional. The taillights on the E-150 use one bulb for the amber brake, turn signal and running light and another for the clear reverse light. Taillight sockets are usually replaced when they burn out. This can be caused by power surging from bulbs not being replaced together, and from moisture entering the taillght housing and causing corrosion in the socket.

Instructions

    1

Open the hood of the E-150 and set the hood prop. Remove the negative battery cable with a ratchet and socket. Move to the rear of the truck on the side that you are going to replace the taillight socket.

    2

Remove the two mounting screws from the outside of the tail lamp using a small Phillips screwdriver. Pull the taillight housing out toward you with one hand. Remove the electrical connectors from the housing with your free hand by turning them counterclockwise.

    3

Cut the old socket free from the wiring with a pair of side cutters. Use a wiring tool or your side cutters gently to unsheathe the wires coming from the van about 1/4 inch inward and inspect the exposed wires. If the wire is blackened or has a greenish tinge, it's not good. Continue unsheathing wire until you get to shiny copper wires. Cut the bad wires free and leave yourself 1/4 inch of exposed copper wire.

    4

Unsheathe about 1/4 inch of wire from the new bulb socket. Attach the wires on the new socket to the wires on the old, matching the colors together. Install butt caps, or electrical crimp ends to attach each of the three wire sets together. Use pliers or a crimping tool to set crimp ends, or simply twist the butt caps onto two wire ends to secure them together. Wrap the joined ends and connecting pieces with electrical tape for insulation.

    5

Install the socket and a bulb into the taillight housing. Turn the socket clockwise to secure it in the housing. Install the taillight assembly back onto the E-150. Tighten the two mounting screws with your driver until the screws are snug. Do not over-tighten the screws or you will crack the taillight housing or mounting tabs.

    6

Install the negative battery cable back onto the battery. Tighten the battery lead tie down snug with a ratchet and socket.
