How to Use the Tool for a Rear Main Seal Removal

The rear main engine oil seal is located between the back side of the engine and the front of the transmission. The purpose of the seal is to keep the engine oil from leaking out of the rear of the engine. Some rear main seals are made out of rubber, while others are made out of rope. You can remove the seal in a few different ways. The best way is to use a rear main seal removal tool, which should help you avoid damaging vital engine components.

Slide a drip pan underneath the location of the rear main seal.

Locate a starting point on the rear main seal. Screw the threaded end of the cork screw that is attached to the bottom of the seal removal tool into the middle of the seal. Grasp the round handle of the seal removal tool, then turn the threaded end of the cork screw into the seal until the entire threads are inside of the seal.

Pull outward on the tool with your hands. If the seal is tight and won't move, grasp the round handle on the end of the tool with the channel lock pliers and pull out on the seal. The pliers will give you extra leverage. When the seal begins to come out, unscrew the threaded end of the tool and screw into a new location on the seal.

Move the seal removal tool to the opposite side of the rear main seal. Screw the threaded end of the cork screw into the seal until the entire threads are inside of the seal. Pull outward on the round handle at the end of the tool with your hands. Use the channel lock pliers as needed for leverage. If the seal begins to come out but will not come out completely, unscrew the threaded end of the tool and move it to a new location on the seal.

Screw the threaded end of the corkscrew into a new area of the seal. Pull out on the round handle and use the pliers as needed for leverage. Continue using this method with the seal removal tool until the entire seal is completely out of the seal base.
