The Ford Explorer was not the first SUV by any stretch. It was, however, the first SUV to offer a wide array of luxurious features, especially in the Eddie Bauer edition. The Explorer became more feature-packed throughout the years, and by time the 2005 model year rolled around, the Explorer came standard with a wide array of high-end features, including air conditioning, cruise control, power windows, keyless entry and a four-speaker, AM-FM audio system with a CD player. Replacing the door-mounted speakers in the Explorer requires you to remove the door panel.

Removing Door Panel

    Pry around the perimeter of the inside door handle bezel the plastic trim around the door handle with a flat-head screwdriver, to disengage its retaining clips. Pull the inside door handle, as if you were opening the door from the inside, and slide the bezel off the door handle.

    Insert the blade of the flat-head screwdriver under the power window lock and power door lock switch assembly and pry it upward to disengage it. Press and hold the unlocking button on each wiring harness plugged into the power window and power door lock switch assembly and pull the wiring harnesses from the assembly.

    Remove the three door trim retaining screws on the front door trim two on the bottom of the panel and one in the cavity where the power window lock switch assembly was with a Phillips screwdriver

    On the rear door trim, remove the two retaining screws one on the bottom of the panel and one under where the door hand bezel was with the Phillips screwdriver.

    Press upward on the door panel from under the armrest to disengage the panel from its retaining clips. Pull the panel outward just enough to access the power mirror switch wiring, on the front drivers door panel only. Press and hold the unlocking button on the power mirror switch wiring harness and unplug it from the power mirror switch.

Replacing Door Speaker

    Remove the four screws securing the speaker with a ratchet and socket.

    Pull the speaker from the door, and pull the wiring harness from the rear of it.

    Plug the wiring harness into the rear receptacle on the rear of the new speaker. Set the speaker in its cavity in the door and tighten its screws with a ratchet and socket.

Installing Door Panel

    Plug the mirror wiring harness into the power mirror switch, on the front, drivers panel only. Guide the power window and power door lock wiring through the hole in the door trim. Line up the tabs on the inside of the door panel up with the slots in the doors frame. Press the door panel downward to engage them.

    Tighten the door trim retaining screws with a Phillips screwdriver two on the rear panel and three on the front panel.

    Pull the inside door handle, as if you are opening the door from the inside, and guide the door handle bezel in place. Press the door handle bezel onto the door trim until its retaining clips snap into place.

    Plug the wiring harnesses into the power window and power door lock switches the harnesses are different sizes to prevent confusion. Line up the power window and power door lock assembly with its hole in the door trim and press it downward until the clips snap into place.
