How to Flush Out a Radiator in a 1993 Oldsmobile

Flushing the radiator in your 1993 Oldsmobile will increase the heat transfer between the radiator and the coolant that flows through the engine. This is very important on engines that have a lot of miles because older engines generally have worn parts that create more heat simply due to age. If you have noticed that your Oldsmobile has been running hotter then normal, do not think that the heat gauge has worn out and your engine is OK. Overheating can cause thousands of dollars in damage--possibly more than the car itself is worth.

Instructions

    1

Jack the driver's side front end of the Oldsmobile up and place a jack stand under the A-arm or other suitable location. Place a wheel chuck behind the rear wheel to keep the vehicle from moving. Jacking only the driver's side will force more fluid out of the radiator.

    2

Place a 3 to 5-gallon drain pan under the drain valve that is located under the radiator on the passenger's side.

    3

Open the drain valve with a pair of pliers. If the valve sticks, use a spray rust remover. Rust remover is available at most popular auto supply locations. Allow all of the fluid to drain from the valve. Once drained, close the valve with the pliers.

    4

Remove the lower radiator hose from the radiator by removing the band clamp that secures the hose to the radiator. Use a screwdriver to remove the clamp.

    5

Pull the lower radiator hose off the radiator and drain any excess fluid from the hose into the drain pan.

    6

Empty the drain pan into a container that can hold several gallons of fluid and place the drain pan back under the Oldsmobile.

    7

Open the radiator filler cap and insert a garden hose into the radiator. Flush the build up out of the radiator until the water that drains out of the radiator is clean. Drain the pan under the car as often as needed.

    8

Place the radiator hose back onto the radiator by securing the band clamp with a screwdriver.

    9

Place a fresh mixture of distilled water and radiator fluid into the filler of the radiator. Follow the instructions printed on the radiator fluid container for fluid/water ratios as they will differ with each Oldsmobile model.
