Connecting rods are metal parts that are used to connect the piston to the crank shaft in piston engines. Side-motion rods are the same thing as connecting rods, but they are used for pistons and cranks that operate with side motions. It follows that connecting side-motion rods requires the same installation process as other connecting rods. You can connect side-motion rods to newly-built piston engines or reconnect them after you disassemble them.

Instructions

    1

Insert the link pin into the piston bearing and tap it with a mallet so that it is inserted into the piston bearing with a small amount of it sticking out on either end. This will allow you to connect the side-motion rod to one end while providing enough exposed pin to tap it into place.

    2

Insert the side-motion rod into the body of the piston. Align the groove in the side-motion rod with the notch in the link pin and push it so that it stays in place.

    3

Place the piston on the wood block with the link pin up and tap the link pin into place with the mallet. Continue tapping it until the link pin is inserted into the retainer groove.

    4

Insert the retainer clip into the retainer-clip groove to secure the side-motion rod in place.
