The check engine light in a 1995 Chevrolet G20 van is designed to notify the driver when a malfunction occurs with one or more of the vehicles systems. The vans powertrain control module, or PCM, constantly monitors a number of sensors to check for potential problems. When the PCM detects a problem, it stores a trouble code in its memory and turns on the check engine light. An automotive scan tool is the only tool that can properly clear trouble codes from the PCMs memory in order to turn off the check engine light.

Instructions

    1

Shift the vans transmission into park and turn off the engine. Apply the parking brake and turn the ignition back to the ON position.

    2

Find the vans diagnostic data port. This port is underneath the dashboard, approximately 6 inches above the pedal area.

    3

Connect the scan tools communication cable to the vans diagnostic data port.

    4

Power on the scan tool and select PCM from the scan tools main menu. Select Codes from the PCM menu. Choose Clear All Current and Previous Trouble Codes from the codes menu. Wait a moment while the scan tool clears the trouble codes.

    5

Turn off the scan tool and disconnect its data cable from the vehicle. Start the engine and verify that the check engine light is no longer on.
