How to Fix a Forklift

A forklift is a powerful machine that moves objects from place to place. Your forklift may require fixing if it is not operating correctly. Operating a forklift in need of repair is a dangerous and costly work hazard. Fix your forklift by checking the levels of the hydraulic oil, antifreeze and engine oil, cleaning debris from the radiators and transmission coolers and lubricating the wheel bearings.

Instructions

    1

Check all the fluid levels of your fork lift and change them if necessary. Fluid levels are important in keeping your vehicle running. Check the hydraulic oil, radiator fluid and engine oil. Change the oil and antifreeze if they are old. Old and dirty oil can speed up the wear and tear on bearings. Old and contaminated antifreeze can clog the radiator core.

    2

Clean the transmission coolers and the radiator. The fan on the engine acts like a vacuum cleaner and can suck dust and debris from the floor. When the radiator clogs, the engine can run hot. Running an engine while it is hot can destroy it quickly. Blow the dust out of oil coolers and radiators using a high-pressured fan. If you have a stubborn clog, you can also use high-pressure water sparingly to break it loose.

    3

Check and lubricate the bearings on the wheels. Use a jack to jack up the wheels, remove them, inspect them, make sure they are properly greased and put the wheels back on. Check for any leaky hoses on your forklift. Spot a leak by looking for oil coming out of the fittings or hoses.
