The 2001 Ford Windstar LX uses a twin-post cable-operated window regulator. The window motor can be replaced without removing the regulator. It is not a difficult process, and it can be done with a minimum of tools. The window motor is side-specific, so when ordering be sure to mention the exact door the motor is intended for. If you can hear the motor running when you depress the switch, the regulator is the problem.

Instructions

    1

Pry the side view mirror cover off with a screwdriver. Pry out the plastic cover that surrounds the inside door handle, using a screwdriver. Remove the bolt behind the door handle with a socket. Pry out the lower marker light. Remove the bolt behind it with a socket.

    2

Remove the two Phillips screws below the arm rest. Lift the window switch out by placing a screwdriver in the rear of the switch panel and prying it up. Disconnect the electrical plugs from the back of the switch. Remove the bolt below the switch panel, using a socket.

    3

Place a common screwdriver in-between the door panel and the door and pry out all the trim fasteners on both sides and the bottom of the panel. Lift the door panel and unhook it from the door sill. Remove the panel.

    4

Peel the moisture shield back to expose the window regulator. Unplug the window motor. Remove the bolts securing the window motor to the door, using a socket. Remove the bolts securing the window motor to the regulator. Pull the motor out of the regulator.

    5

Install the new motor by twisting it slightly as it is pushed into the regulator, in order to engage the gears. Align the holes in the motor and regulator and install the bolts. Align the holes in the motor and door panel. Install the bolts.

    6

Plug in the electrical connector into the window motor. Install the moisture shield. Install the door panel and align the trim fasteners with the holes in the door -- push them in. Plug the window switch into the harness and insert the window switch into the door panel.
