Chevy attached the Malibu name to one of its most popular muscle cars of the 1960s, the Chevelle. The Malibu name acted as the top trim level available on the Chevelle from 1964 through 1977. From 1978 through 1983, the Malibu name took the place of the Chevelle, as the vehicle underwent a slow and painful death, resulting from strict emission requirements and lackluster late-1970s early-1980s styling. In 1997, Chevrolet revived the Malibu name, but as a mid-sized family car. The 1999 Malibu came standard with an AM-FM audio system and had an optional CD or cassette player available. Installing a stereo in the 1999 Malibu requires a few tools and basic mechanical knowledge.
