What Is Voltage Loss Resistance on a Honda Motorcycle?

Voltage loss resistance is a method of isolating motorcycle electrical problems. Using an ohmmeter and a circuit tester, wiring and electrical devices are checked for voltage resistance, which is measured in ohms. A deviation from expected resistance reveals a faulty wire or component.

Battery

    As the first step, check the battery -- the simplest part of the electrical system -- for proper voltage and amperage. Ascertain that the battery is charged. If the motorcycle starts, it does not necessarily mean that the battery is good.

Shop Manual

    Consult the motorcycle's shop manual for expected resistance values. The manual has a wiring diagram to help with the troubleshooting process. It also explains the wire color codes and where to test for resistance on electrical parts such as alternators and ignition coils.

Circuit Tester

    The circuit tester is an electric probe with a length of wire and a light. Place the probe at one end of a wire and the alligator clip on the tester's wire at the other end. If the light does not come on, a faulty wire has been found.

Ohmmeter

    The ohmmeter has two electric probes that run an electric current through electric components. If the ohm reading is outside the expected reading from the shop manual, a faulty device is located.
