How to Remove the Radiator on a Jeep Cherokee Sport 2000

The 2000 Jeep Cherokee Sports cooling system consists primarily of a thermostat, a water pump and a radiator. The water pump circulates the radiators coolant through the engine. The thermostat prevents the coolant from circulating through the engine until the engine reaches its normal temperature. The radiators sole purpose is to chill the coolant before it returns to the engine. A defective radiator will result in overheating, even if the other components are in working condition. The radiator can either be serviced or replaced, but in either event, it must first be removed from the Cherokee.

Instructions

    1

Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery with a wrench.

    2

Twist the radiator pressure cap off of the drivers side of the radiator.

    3

Drain the coolant from the radiator by turning the petcock plug at the base of the radiator in a counterclockwise direction with a wrench.

    4

Remove the bolts which secure the power steering fluid reservoir to the side of the radiator with a wrench then set the reservoir to the side within the engine compartment.

    5

Take off the four fan assembly nuts which secure the fan assembly to the water pump with a wrench then lift the assembly off of the engine.

    6

Remove the bolts which secure the grille to the front of the radiator with a wrench then lift the grille off of the Jeep.

    7

Take off the bolts which secure the fan shroud to the radiator with a wrench then lift the fan shroud off of the radiator.

    8

Remove the bolts which secure the upper cross-member to the top of the radiator with a wrench then lift the cross-member off of the radiator.

    9

Loosen the tension on the radiators upper and lower hose clamps with a screwdriver, then pull both hoses off of the radiator.

    10

Remove the transmission lines from the base of the engine-side of the radiator with a quick-disconnect tool if the Cherokee is equipped with an automatic transmission.

    11

Lift the radiator out of the engine compartment.
