Instruction to Install an Auto Water Pump

Your vehicle's water pump is a critical piece of equipment necessary for cooling the engine. Replacing one can be a hassle depending on the arrangement under the hood, but items such as fan shrouds and plastic separators are easily removable and can give you easier access to bolts and belts that you will need to remove and reinstall. When installing a water pump, inspect and replace the circulating fan and drive belt as they likely have as much wear as the water pump.

Instructions

Remove the Old Water Pump

    1

Disconnect the battery from the car and drain the radiator by unscrewing the drain plug. Make sure your drain pan is placed below the opening and is large enough to hold all of the fluid.

    2

Unscrew the hose clamp securing the hose that connects the pump to the radiator, and disconnect the hose.

    3

Loosen the tension on the belt pulley by using a belt tool to pull on the belt tensioner. This will relieve the belt of tension, allowing you to remove it.

    4

Loosen and remove all bolts and brackets securing the water pump with a socket. Set these aside in a secure location so that you won't drop them or lose them.

    5

Loosen and remove the water pump pulley with a socket. Remove the old water pump, and scrape off any gasket or O ring material that may be stuck to the sealing surface.

Install the New Water Pump

    6

Place a bead of sealant around the sealing surface if your water pump is sealed with a gasket. If it it sealed with an O ring, do not use any sealant.

    7

Place the gasket on the mounting surface and situate the new water pump where the old one was. Use an anti-corrosive coating on the mounting bolts and secure them with a torque wrench. Set the torque at the recommended setting of your water pump.

    8

Replace all brackets and bolts that you removed when you loosened the old water pump. Replace the water pump belt and the drive belt, and reset their tension using the belt tensioner pulley.

    9

Replace the drain plug on the radiator. Fill the coolant reservoir with antifreeze mix and start the engine to circulate the coolant. Check under the vehicle for any leaks.
