Automobile air-conditioning (A/C) is a comfortable feature in a vehicle, but it is not a mandatory engine component. An A/C bypass pulley is the best option for a vehicle that has a broken or seized A/C compressor.
Identification
An A/C compressor pressurizes a refrigerant that physically cools the air in a car's interior. The vehicle's serpentine belt powers the compressor as well as other engine parts, such as the alternator. The belt will stop running if the compressor seizes, causing the alternator and other accessories to fail.
Benefits
Remove the compressor and attach an A/C bypass pulley in the compressor's position. The pulley allows placement and movement of the serpentine belt without an A/C compressor. Using this method, an owner can delay compressor repairs while still using the car, but the A/C will not function.
Considerations
Inspect the serpentine belt when replacing the compressor with the bypass pulley. Replace the belt if it is worn or damaged from compressor failure or seizure.
