The check engine light on a 2001 Chevy S-10 truck indicates a malfunction in one or more computer controlled circuits or devices used to control the engine and emission controls. The computer conducts self-checks by doing three tests checking for continuity, operation of all devices and finally a logic test. It compares each devices signal to similar signals to test the rational and if it is within parameters. If a failure is detected, the computer stores the failure and turns the check engine light on to indicate a code has been stored. Each type of failure is given a code.
Tools
To check the codes and determine the problem, you will need a code scanner. There is no need for panic; they are not expensive and can be purchased at any auto parts store. On a high note, the scanner is compatible with the vast majority of post-1996 vehicles. Some less-advanced scanners also come with a code sheet listing the codes on most vehicles.
Setup
To extract the codes from the S-10, plug the scanner into the on-board diagnostics port located under the dash just to the left of the steering column. Turn the ignition key on with the engine off. Depress the key marked Read and record the five-digit code or codes as they are displayed. Turn the key off.
Code Format
All codes will be displayed with a letter followed by four numbers. The first letter will denote the system where the failure has occurred: P for powertrain, B for body, C for chassis and U for network. The next number denotes the scanning tool procedure, 0 for generic and 1 for manufacturer-specific or a more advanced tool. The third number represents the specific system the failure occurred in and the last number is an explanation of the type of failure and other pertinent information.
Procedure
If your scanner does not show the explanation of the code on its display, cross-reference the codes displayed with the accompanying code sheet for an explanation of the failure and any pertinent information. Correct the problem before proceeding to clear the codes. The light will simply come back on if the problem is still present.
Clearing the Codes
Turn the key on with the engine off. Press the key marked Erase and the scanner will clear the code from the computers memory. The check engine light will go out and stay out if you properly repaired the problem.
