Brake Rotor Installation for a Land Rover

Rotors on the Land Rover serve as friction points for the brake pads to slow down and stop the vehicle. The brake caliper sits above the rotor and holds two brake pads, one in front and one behind the rotor. When you push on the brake pedal with your foot, it activates the caliper. The caliper then pushes out a piston and squeezes the rotor between the two pads. The friction creates heat, and if the brake rotors get too hot, they could warp. There are other reasons to replace the rotors, such as damage from the brake pads wearing too thin before you change them. You would usually change the rotors at the same time you change the brake pads.

Instructions

    1

Park the Land Rover on a level surface, turn off the ignition and place the wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.

    2

Jack up the Land Rover using the automobile jack. Place a jack stand under the vehicle, near the jacking point. Raise the jack stand up to the frame.

    3

Remove the wheel using the lug wrench. Remove the brake caliper using the socket and ratchet. Secure the caliper to the strut using a wire tie. Do not let the brake caliper hang or you will damage the brake line.

    4

Remove the rotor retaining screws with the screwdriver. Pull the rotor off the wheel assembly. If it does not come off easily, hit it with the rubber mallet several times until it breaks loose.

    5

Put the new rotor on the wheel assembly and tighten the retaining screws with the screwdriver. Put the caliper in the mounting bracket and tighten the bolts with the socket and ratchet. Put the wheel back on the Land Rover and tighten the lug nuts with the lug wrench.

    6

Remove the jack stand from under the Land Rover and lower the vehicle with the jack to the ground. Repeat the process on the other wheel.
