How to Change the Rotors on a Honda Accord

All of the components of the Honda Accord anti lock braking system are critical to the performance of the brakes. The brake pads need to be intact, with substantial padding, so that the vehicle slows and stops upon command. The brake fluid needs to be sufficiently available to provide the hydraulic pressure to execute the proper function of the braking system. The brake rotors are particularly important; they need to be in pristine condition to enable the entire braking system to perform at an expected level. If your rotor is significantly scored or warped, it is essential that you replace it immediately.

Instructions

    1

Park the Honda in an area that will allow you ample space to remove the rotor. Seek the location on a relatively flat surface, in a dry area, away from passing traffic.

    2

Loosen the lug nuts on the wheel or wheels that you intend to repair, with the tire iron.

    3

Place the lifting jack beneath the frame of the Accord and lift the vehicle. Place jack stands under the frame, and lower the vehicle onto the stands. The tires on the Honda should be clear of the ground while the vehicle is resting on the jack stands.

    4

Remove the lug nuts and pull the wheels from the wheel bolts.

    5

Remove the caliper by removing the two caliper bolts the 17 mm wrench. The caliper bolts are found on the side of the caliper closest to the frame of the vehicle. Pull the caliper from the rotor.

    6

Pull the rotor from the wheel bolts. If the rotor is stuck onto the wheel bolts or the steering knuckle behind it by rust, spray the connected areas with chain lubricant. If the rotor is still bound to the vehicle, use a hammer to tap the back side of the rotor until it is free from the wheel bolts.

    7

Spray the new rotor with brake cleaner. Wipe the rotor with a towel to remove the packing oil and the brake cleaner. Place the new rotor onto the wheel bolts of the Accord. Make sure that the protruding inner ring of the rotor (the top hat section) is facing outward.

    8

Place the brake caliper around the new rotor. Replace the caliper bolts and tighten them with a 17 mm wrench.

    9

Place the wheels onto the wheel bolts and screw on the lug nuts. Lift the vehicle with the jack, remove the jack stands, and lower the vehicle to the ground. Tighten the lug nuts with the tire iron.
