How to Install a Rear View Mirror on a 1996 GMC Sonoma Truck

A rear-view mirror is an important component to any vehicle. It allows the driver to look through the rear window without turning around. It is also a complement to the side mirrors mounted on either side of the car, providing a view of three sides of the vehicle. Rear-view mirrors are designed to disconnect from the window if a passenger is thrown against the windshield during a collision. If necessary, replace the rear-view mirror as soon as possible because it allows the driver to keep his or her eyes directed toward the front of the vehicle while driving.

Instructions

    1

Measure across the width of the windshield with a measuring tape to determine the middle of the window. Mark the middle point on the outside of the windshield with a wax pencil.

    2

Draw a straight line using the tape measure on the outside of the windshield from the top to the bottom. Make sure the line is drawn on the middle point established in the above step.

    3

Measure 21 inches up from the bottom of the windshield using the tape measure.

    4

Draw a two-inch intersecting line perpendicular to the line drawn in Step Two.

    5

Clean the inside of the windshield in the surrounding area where the two lines intersect using window cleaner and a clean rag. Wipe the area until it is completely dry.

    6

Wipe the clean area again with rubbing alcohol and a clean rag. The rubbing alcohol removes leftover debris.

    7

Scuff the bottom of the mirror support with 320-grit sandpaper. Sanding the bottom of the support provides traction. Clean the bottom of the support with rubbing alcohol and a clean rag.

    8

Apply a bonding adhesive, such as Loctite, to the bottom of the mirror support.

    9

Position the straight edge of the support on the line established in Step Four. Make sure the rounded portion of the support is facing upward.

    10

Apply steady, constant pressure to the support and against the windshield for up to a minute. Pressure can be released after a minute.

    11

Clean any adhesive that seeped out when applying pressure. Allow the adhesive to dry for five minutes before cleaning. Clean the wax pencil lines from the inside and outside of the windshield.

    12

Slide the mirror onto the support.
