The gearing inside of the standard transmission for your 1996 Nissan Altima is designed for all-weather driving. When you need to rebuild the transmission during a repair, parts are readily available from many automobile parts store. Even if you are a novice mechanic, the rebuild and reassembly of a 1996 Altima transmission can be done in your garage or workshop in a few hours' time.

Instructions

    1

Find the four mounting bolts securing the bell housing to the base of the transmission. Remove these bolts by using the socket wrench.

    2

Separate the bell housing by pulling it off the base. This will expose the pinion rods that are mounted to the inside wall of the transmission. Find the lower control arm, the upper control arm and the gear shift inside the transmission.

    3

Insert a new rear gear from the transmission rebuild kit into the slot on the rear pinon gear of the lower control arm. Secure the rear gear by tightening each set screw with an Allen wrench. Attach a new rear pinon to the lower control arm. Repeat this step with the upper control arm.

    4

Find the notches that are on the shaft of the gearshift. Slide the new pinon gears into these notches and tighten with an Allen wrench. Place the housing gasket on the mating surface of the bell housing.

    5

Mate the bell housing with the base of the transmission. Secure the bell housing by tightening all the mounting bolts.
