The 1992 Lincoln Mark VII's heater core is vital to the proper functioning of the vehicle's heater system. The Mark VII's heater core is the device that heats up the air blown into the passenger compartment. A faulty heater core not only means disables the vehicle's production of warm air, but it can also lead to liquids being leaked into the passenger compartment or even cause smoke to blow out of the air vents. In the case of a malfunctioning heater core, you should remove it and replace it as soon as possible.

Turn the Mark VII's engine off and open the hood. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery, using a socket wrench. Wait five minutes to pass before proceeding.
2Remove the two bolts on the left side of the dashboard with a socket wrench.
3Remove the two bolts at the rear of the steering column. Carefully lower the steering column down onto the driver's side seat.
4Open and empty the glove box. Pull on the release tab at the rear of the glove box to remove it from the dashboard.
5Remove the two screws above the instrument cluster with a Phillips screwdriver. Pry off the upper dash piece above the cluster.
6Remove the four screws securing the instrument cluster and disconnect its electrical connector. Pull it out of the vehicle.
7Remove the screws from the left-side kick panel -- there is one screw in each corner. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the screws.
8Disconnect the three electrical connectors revealed by removing the kick panel.
9Pry off the parking brake cover with a slotted screwdriver.
10Lift up the four slots on the bottom of the center console with a slotted screwdriver to reveal four screws. Remove the four screws with a Phillips screwdriver and pull the center console out of the Mark VII.
11Remove the five screws from the top-left edge of the dashboard. At this point, you can carefully swing the dashboard outwards. Rest the dashboard on the passenger's seat -- this will allow access to the heater core.
12Unplug the two hoses connected to the heater core cover. Remove the four screws from the cover and pull it off.
13Disconnect the heater core's electrical connector and remove the two bolts securing the heater core to the vehicle, using a socket wrench. Pull the heater core out of the Mark VII.
