How to Diagnose a 1992 Civic Speedometer Problems

The 1992 Honda Civic has a speedometer on the instrument cluster, along with a tachometer, odometer and fuel gauge. The most common issue of a nonfunctional speedometer is a faulty fuse, but it could also be a loose wiring connector, a broken needle or even a faulty cluster. Repairing any of those issues is fairly simple and should not take more than a half hour to complete.

Instructions

    1

Insert the keys into the ignition of your Civic and turn the engine on. Keep the vehicle in "Park."

    2

Press down on the accelerator pedal slightly to inspect the gauges on the instrument cluster. If all of the gauges are malfunctioning, the issue is with either the fuse, the cluster's wiring connectors or the cluster itself. If only the speedometer is malfunctioning, the issue is most likely with the needle of the speedometer.

    3

Turn the engine off. Lift up the hood and disconnect the battery with a socket wrench. Remove the fuse block cover, and use a fuse-puller to remove the fuse in slot five. Install a replacement 7.5A fuse into the fuse-block.

    4

Remove the two screws from above the instrument cluster, holding the upper plastic panel to the Civic. Remove the upper plastic panel. Remove the four screws securing the instrument cluster into the Civic. Pull the cluster out towards you and check the wiring connectors. Lightly tug on both wiring connectors. If they come loose, securely plug them into the rear of the cluster. If the problem persists, you will need to either replace the cluster if all of the gauges are malfunctioning or replace the needle if only the speedometer is malfunctioning.

    5

Disconnect the wiring connectors and remove the cluster from the Civic. Remove the clips from the edge of the cluster to remove the clear plastic protector. This will allow you access to the speedometer needle. Remove the screw from the needle and install a replacement. Reattach the clear protector and the clips.

    6

Place the cluster back into the Civic or, if necessary, place a new cluster into the Civic. Reattach the wiring connectors and all of the screws. Reattach the upper plastic panel. Reconnect the battery and close the hood.
