In some vehicles, the speaker grille can be removed to gain access to the speaker without removing the door panel. This is not the case with the 1997 Toyota Celica. In this vehicle, the door panels must be completely removed to access the speakers. There are two speakers in each door: a small tweeter in the upper corner near the mirror, and a larger woofer near the bottom of the door panel. Replacement speakers are available from most electronics retailers.

Instructions

Removal

    1

Slide a shop rag between the window crank handle and the door panel. Move the rag back and forth until its completely wrapped around the back side of the window crank. Pull the rag forward to dislodge the window crank from the crank spindle.

    2

Insert a flat-head screwdriver between the tweeter speaker cover and the door frame. Pry the speaker cover away from the door frame, taking care not to scratch the door or break the plastic.

    3

Remove the screw holding the inside handle bezel to the door panel with a Phillips screwdriver. Pry out the power window switch, if equipped, with a flat-head screwdriver and disconnect its electrical connector. Pry the courtesy light out of the door panel with a flat-head screwdriver and disconnect its electrical connector.

    4

Remove the two plug hole covers near the door handle using a flat-head screwdriver. Remove the eight screws holding the door panel to the door with a metric nut driver. Insert a trim panel stick between the trim panel and the door. Pry around the circumference of the door to dislodge any retaining clips in the trim panel from the door.

    5

Lift up on the panel and remove it from the door. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the upper tweeter speaker and the lower woofer speaker. Remove the two screws holding the upper speaker to the door with a Phillips screwdriver and remove the speaker. Remove the four screws holding the lower speaker to the door with a Phillips screwdriver. Remove the speaker.

Installation

    6

Set the new tweeter speaker in place and install its retaining screws. Torque the screws to 69 inch-pounds with a torque wrench. Set the woofer speaker in place and install its retaining screws. Torque the screws to 69 inch-pounds. Connect the electrical connectors to both speakers.

    7

Mate the top flange on the door panel to the leading edge of the door skeleton. Align the trim panel push pins in the door with the holes in the door skeleton. Seat the trim panel push pins by tapping the trim panel with a rubber mallet.

    8

Install the trim panel retaining screws around the circumference of the trim panel with a metric nut driver. Install the plug hole covers.

    9

Connect the courtesy lights electrical connector and press the light into its hole in the door panel until it snaps into place. Connect the power window switchs electrical connector, if equipped, then press the switch panel back into place.

    10

Set the handle bezel into place and install its retaining screw using a Phillips screwdriver. Set the tweeter speaker cover into place and press in and down until it snaps into position. Slide the window crank, if equipped, in a 10 oclock position over the window crank shaft, and press it down until it snaps into place.

    11

Test the crank, door locks, power window switches and other accessories to make sure they properly function and are reassembled correctly. Open and close the door to make sure the door panel doesnt rattle and securely is installed. Turn on the radio and test the speakers to ensure they properly operate.
