The water pump is the heart of the Chrysler Sebring's cooling system, circulating the coolant. Serious damage can be done to the engine of your Chrysler Sebring by not changing out a faulty water pump.

Instructions

2.0L and 2.4L Sebring Engines

    1

    Disconnect the negative battery cable.

    2

Place a drain pan underneath the radiator. Once the engine cools off, drain the cooling system from the radiator into the pan.

    3

Remove the right inner splash shield.

    4

Support the engine and remove the accessory drive belts, the right motor mount and the power steering pump bracket bolts. Move the pump and bracket assembly to the side and do not disconnect the lines to the power steering fluid.

    5

Take out the bracket to the right engine mount, the front covers to the timing belt and loosen the tensioner screws to the timing belt in order to remove the timing belt.

    6

Remove the camshaft sprockets and the cover to the rear timing belt.

    7

Loosen and remove the water pump bolts and remove the water pump from the engine.

    8

Clean all the mating surfaces and install the new water pump with a new o-ring, making sure that the o-ring is seated correctly in the groove before you tighten the bolts. Bolts are to be tightened to 105 inch pounds. (12 Nm).

    9

Pressurize the cooling system to 15 psi. Search for leaks. If everything checks out, reinstall or reconnect all components in the order that they were removed.

    10

Reattach the negative batter cable, refill the cooling system, start the engine and check that the cooling system is operating properly.

2.5L Sebring Engine

    11

    Disconnect the negative battery cable.

    12

Place a drain pan underneath the radiator. When the engine is cool, drain the cooling system from the radiator into the pan.

    13

Remove the accessory drive belts and the crankshaft damper.

    14

Support the engine and remove the right engine mount, the upper left timing belt cover, the upper right timing belt cover and the lower timing belt cover. Then remove the timing belt and tensioner.

    15

Remove the water pump from the water inlet pipe.

    16

Clean all the mating surfaces and install the new water pump with a new gasket and a new o-ring, making sure that the o-ring is seated correctly in the groove before you tighten the bolts. Bolts are to be tightened to 20 foot pounds. (27 Nm).

    17

    Reattach the negative batter cable.

    18

Refill the cooling system, start the engine and check that the cooling system is operating properly.

2.7L Sebring Engine

    19

    Disconnect the negative battery cable.

    20

Place a drain pan underneath the radiator. When the engine is cool, drain the cooling system from the radiator into the pan.

    21

Remove the timing chain cover along with the timing chain and its guides.

    22

Loosen and remove the water pump bolts and take the pump out of the engine. Throw away the gasket.

    23

Clean all the mating surfaces and install the new pump with a new gasket, tightening the bolts to 105 inch pounds (12 Nm).

    24

Reinstall all components in the order in which they were removed.

    25

    Reattach the negative batter cable.

    26

Refill the cooling system, start the engine and check that the cooling system is operating properly.
