How to Prevent Fisheye

Painting your car yourself can be a rewarding experience. Not just in terms of personal pride, but also in terms of cash. Avoiding costly labor rates charged by auto body shops can save you hundreds of dollars. When you do your own work, however, there is no liability if something goes wrong. Fisheye bubbles, which are air bubbles trapped underneath a coat of paint, form when a painting surface has not been properly cleaned. To prevent them, you need to thoroughly clean your painting surface.

Instructions

    1

Wash the painting surface with soap and water. Dry with a clean towel.

    2

Apply degreaser to the painting surface. Spread with a clean rag, then wipe the degreaser off with a different rag. Multiple applications may be necessary. If the degreaser beads on the painting surface, or if the rag appears dirty when removing degreaser, then another application is required.

    3

Clean the painting surface with soap and water, then degreaser, before and after each phase of the painting process.
