When a Jeep overheats, an inexperienced mechanic may think that simply adding a lower temperature thermostat or eliminating the thermostat altogether is a solution. However, an over-cooled engine is just as bad as an over-heated engine.
Build-Up
A gas engine creates its power through internal combustion, which is a dirty process that creates a lot of sticky, tar-like substances. Your engine relies on the proper engine temperature to prevent these substances from sticking, as they cause poor fuel economy and poor running in general.
No Heat
The vehicle's heater system is warmed by the heat from the coolant. If the coolant is kept too cool, the heater will not function properly on cold days.
Lubrication
Engine oil needs to be heated in order to flow at a faster rate. If the engine is kept too cool, the engine oil remains thick and cannot flow to the top portion of the engine at the proper rate. This also causes unneeded stress on your Jeep's oil pump.
Electronics
When the engine remains at a low temperature, your Jeep's computer remains in "closed loop" mode. This means it is running all of its electrical components at an estimated average from previous drive cycles. Extended periods of time in this mode can lead to mechanical or electrical systems failure.
