The 2006 Subaru Legacy Outback is a station wagon manufactured since 1995, well before the iPhone and other portable MP3 players were used in vehicles. As a result, the 2006 Outback did not come with an auxiliary jack for iPhones. There are iPhone adapters that can be slipped into a cassette player. However, if the Outback does not have a cassette player, these adapters are useless. Another option is a RCA port which can be attached directly to the Subaru's stereo.

Instructions

    1

Pull the hood release lever on the Subaru Legacy and prop the hood open. Remove the Legacy's negative battery cable with a wrench and pull the cable aside so it does not touch the battery post.

    2

Pull the ash tray out beneath the stereo and use a screwdriver to remove the two screws holding the bracket that holds it in place. Remove the bracket and set the screws aside.

    3

Slip the tip of the screwdriver underneath the trim panel surrounding the Outback's stereo and gently pry it loose.

    4

Remove the screws that run along the edges of the stereo, set them aside and then gently slide the stereo out from the dash.

    5

Find the dual RCA jacks on the back of the Outback stereo. They are red and white in color.

    6

Plug the RCA adapter cords into the RCA jacks on the back of the stereo.

    7

Replace the negative battery cable on the Outback and turn the key to the "On" position to test the iPhone jack.

    8

Plug the other end of the RCA adapter's plug into the headphone jack of the iPhone.

    9

Set the stereo system to the auxiliary position and power up the iPod to test it.

    10

Turn the key off and then slide the radio back into the dash panel. Insert the screws that held the radio in place with the screwdriver.

    11

Reinstall the trim panel and ashtray.
