Internal combustion is a dirty process, and not much more can be done to clean it up -- even in modern vehicles. The 2005 Grand Cherokee is no exception to this rule. Jeep fitted the Grand Cherokee with a positive crankcase system to help transfer the harmful vapors in the crankcase to the combustion chamber for burning. A small valve -- PCV valve -- controls the flow of these gases into the combustion chamber. The 2005 Grand Cherokee's PCV valve is not overly difficult to replace, but Jeep sure did put it in an unusual area.

Instructions

    1

Find the positive crankcase ventilation valve on the oil filler tube, just below the oil filler cap. Pull the rubber vacuum hose from the top of the PCV valve to disconnect the valve from the PCV tube.

    2

Twist the PCV valve about a quarter-turn counterclockwise to unlock it, and pull it out of the oil filler tube. The PCV valve will pull out easily once you have unlocked it, never attempt to force the valve out of the oil filler tube, because you may break it off inside the tube.

    3

Line the tabs on a new PCV valve up with the notches in the oil filler tube. Insert the PCV valve into the oil filler tube, and twist it clockwise until it clicks into place.

    4

Press the rubber hose on the end of the PCV tube onto the nipple on top of the PCV valve.
