The law says that if you have a crack in the windshield of your Mazda 626 that is bigger than a quarter, the windshield must be replaced. Going over a bump in the road can turn the smallest of cracks into a large one so replacing a cracked windshield is the sensible thing to do. You can do the repair yourself if you take your time and follow the right steps, checking each one as you go.
Instructions
Removal
- 1
Verify that the windshield frame is sound and that there are no signs of damage, such as dents or corrosion.
2Lay vinyl sheets across the hood to protect it in case the windshield shatters when you remove it.
3Put on safety glasses and work gloves.
4Remove the wiper blades and wiper arms with a flat head screwdriver. Remove the rubber gasket around the windshield by prying it away with the screwdriver then gently pulling it.
5Break the seal that runs around the windshield. Insert a crowbar under the corner of the windshield and pop it out. Work all the way around the windshield until it is free of its mounting. Lift the windshield out of its frame with the help of an assistant.
Installation
- 6
Sand around the edge of the new windshield and the frame then apply bonding agent to both the windshield and the frame.
7Mount the new windshield into the frame and press it into position.
8Replace the rubber gasket and wipe away any excess bonding agent.
9Re-attach the wiper arms and blades with the screwdriver.
