A chipped windshield can be a minor annoyance but can turn into a serious problem if it isn't fixed before winter. Cold weather and precipitation can cause a chip to turn into a crack, and a crack into a major problem. Fortunately, do-it-yourself windshield repair kits are sold at most major retailers and auto repair stores. It doesn't take long, it's easy, and it's much cheaper than going somewhere to have it done.

Instructions

    1

Clean the chipped area with glass cleaner and allow it to dry. Once the area is dry, place a rag below the chipped area to catch any of the resin that comes from the do-it-yourself kit.

    2

Open the kit, which will feature an adhesive disc. Place the disc in the middle of the chip and point the tab of the disc toward you. Place the pedestal that was featured in the kit on to the tab.

    3

Open the syringe and put it within the pedestal. Pull the plunger out from the syringe and then release it. This will force the compound into the chip. Typically, the process must be done about 10 times, although it can vary by brand.

    4

Allow the repaired area to dry under sunlight for about a half hour, then check for air bubbles. If any air bubbles exist, place more compound into the area.

    5

Finish the process by removing the syringe, then remove the pedestal and disc with a razor. If any of the repair compound remains, clean it off with the razor, being careful not to scratch the glass.
