How to Replace a Windshield in a 2002 Grand Prix

Replacing the windshield in your 2002 Grand Prix not only adds beauty to your car, it can also save your life. Before the 1970s, vehicles were made with steel, not fiberglass and other lighter materials common in cars today. Designers of the 2002 Grand Prix calculate the inherent strength of the windshield into the strength and safety of the car. A windshield installed incorrectly on a later model vehicle can quite literally kill you if you're involved in an accident. Follow these steps carefully to insure a correct and safe installation of the windshield.

Instructions

    1

Inspect the broken windshield and the area around the windshield. Check for dents, cracks and corrosion. You must fix structure damage first.

    2

Prepare the area around the broken windshield. Place a vinyl cloth on the interior and exterior of the car. Apply tape over any exterior vents near the windshield to protect the car from broken glass.

    3

Remove the wiper blades with a puller tool.

    4

Remove the trim around the outside windshield. The waterproof rubber can be removed with the removal tool. Insert the tool under the trim and pull towards you until all the rubber is removed.

    5

Remove the adhesive material holding the broken windshield in place. Insert the windshield knife under the windshield and go around the windshield. The broken windshield should now be loose in the frame.

    6

Remove the windshield. Attach the windshield puller to the windshield with the two suction cups.

    7

Prepare the windshield mounting surface and new windshield. The area where it will be installed must be clear of all debris. Run the windshield scraper along the mounting surface and apply the bonding agent. Take the scraper knife and scruff the mounting areas around the new windshield. Apply the bonding agent.

    8

Apply an ample supply of caulk around the mounting area of the car.

    9

Install the new windshield using the windshield puller to position it on the mounting surface. After the bonding agent has dried, re-install the rubber trim around the windshield.
