Chevrolet's Heavy-Duty trucks have stronger frames and better transmission components. When doing heavy duty work, the engine needs to be kept as cool as possible. The fan clutch, if you have a mechanical engine cooling fan, requires changing when it malfunctions. If the fan clutch malfunctions, the fan will not spin as it was designed to spin and causes the engine to overheat. Changing this component is not as hard as it seems and can be completed in your garage at home.
Instructions
- 1
Place your truck in park, open the hood and locate the upper fan shroud. Remove the upper fan shroud, using the appropriate socket.
2Detach the fan and clutch assembly, using the appropriate socket. Lift the fan and clutch assembly out of the engine.
3Unbolt the fan clutch from the fan with the socket and ratchet.
4Bolt the new fan clutch onto the fan and tighten the bolts to 17 foot-pounds of torque.
5Reinstall the fan and clutch assembly and tighten the fan clutch nut to 41 foot-pounds of torque. Reinstall the upper fan shroud and tighten the fasteners firmly.
