A pushrod is a straight metal rod connected to the cam shaft and engine. The cam shaft moves the rod in a reciprocating motion to operate the valves on an internal combustion engine. If the arm is bent it will not operate the valves properly, which can cause the engine to misfire and die. If the pushrod is dramatically bent, you will know before removing it. But if the rod has a small bend it may be difficult to determine while still attached to the engine.
Instructions
- 1
Inspect the pushrod. Once the rod has been removed from the engine the bend may visible to the eye.
2Place the pushrod on a flat surface. Position your face at the same level as the pushrod.
3Roll the pushrod slowly across the surface. Look directly at the space between the rod and the surface. If you see light between it and the surface, the pushrod is bent and will need to be replaced.
