The 1991 Ford Mustang base engine was a 2.3-liter in-line four-cylinder. The optional engine was a 5.0-liter V-8 that produced 225 horsepower. The 1991 Mustang was available in two-door hardtop, three-door hatchback, or two-door convertible body packages. The spark plug wires on both engines are similar to remove and replace, though there are twice the number of plugs on the V-8 engine. Replacing the plug wires will add stability to the engine ignition system.

Instructions

    1

Open the Mustang's hood and set the hood prop. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery using a ratchet and socket. Pull the rubber boot on the center-front of the engine upward by hand.

    2

Remove a single spark plug wire from the top of the distributor. Pull that wire through the side hole in the distributor protector boot and follow the route of the wire with your hand to the engine. Plastic clips on the engine hold the wires in place. Open these clips with a flat-head screwdriver. Replace any clips that you break and do not let the wires hang freely. Disconnect the spark plug wire from the spark plug by pulling it off the plug with a twisting motion. Use pliers if needed.

    3

Insert dielectric grease into both ends of the new spark plug wire. Install the wire onto the spark plug end and push it onto the plug until it clicks and locks into place. Insert the other end through the side hole in the distributor protector, then onto the distributor. Go back to the spark plug end and insert the wire into any holding clips between the spark plug end and the distributor end of the wire.

    4

Repeat steps 2 and 3 to replace the rest of the spark plug wires. Connect the negative battery cable and tighten it snug. Install the distributor protector back over the distributor.
