How to Stop a Leak in an Automobile Heating System

Problems in an automobile's heating system usually come from leaks, and these problems usually come at the worst possible times. If there is a slow leak somewhere in the heating system, a person has a few choices for repairing the leaks. One repair method uses commercially available products, and the second method uses products found around the house. Either method of repairing a leak in the automobile heating system is simple and inexpensive for anyone to do.

Fixing a Leak Using a Coolant With Sealer

    1

Turn off the automobile and let the coolant system cool down completely. Let it sit for several hours before repairing the car. Remove the radiator cap slowly and keep your face clear of the cap. The cap builds up pressure and springs off when turned if a person isn't careful. It's like taking a cap off a carbonated drink after shaking it.

    2

Pour the required amount of radiator coolant with sealer into the radiator opening. Start the car engine, and set the heater setting all the way to hot. This opens up the valve on the automobile's heater core where the heat is produced for your heater. Opening the valve lets the coolant system run through that area. While the car is running, keep a close watch on the temperature gauge and the fluid level in the radiator. If the car starts to run hot, turn off the car immediately.

    3

Check the area that was leaking. Run the car with a slow dripping leak a little bit longer until the sealant reaches and stops the leak while adding water slowly to the radiator. Put on the radiator cap and run the engine again. Look for any leaks again before driving.

Fixing a Leak With a House Product

    4

Follow the same procedure outlined in Step 1 of Section 1 for turning off and cooling down your automobile before you proceed.

    5

Add 1 tbs. of black ground pepper into the opening on the radiator. Start the car engine and set the heater setting all the way to hot. This opens up the valve on the automobile's heater core where your heater's heat is produced and that allows the coolant system to run through that area. While the car is running, keep checking the temperature gauge and the fluid level in the radiator. Turn off the car immediately if the car starts to run hot. The black pepper flakes fill the leaks in the heating system.

    6

Check the area that was leaking. Run the car with a slow dripping leak a little bit longer until the pepper reaches and stops the leak while adding water slowly to the radiator. Replace the radiator cap and run the engine again. Check for any leaks again before driving.
