How to Tune My Edelbrock Carb Fuel Mixture

The Edelbrock four-barrel carburetor has been powering countless rods, race cars and grocery-getters ever since the legendary company perfected the design by making it rugged and dead-reliable. Like any carburetor, however, you'll have to dial it in for maximum performance. Whether doing an engine swap, rebuild, carburetor and intake upgrade, or just keeping your ride afloat, learn the basic method to getting the air-fuel mixture right.

Instructions

    1

Start your engine and let it warm up to normal operating temperature.

    2

Check to make sure the choke is fully open.

    3

Turn the air screw on the carburetor either clockwise or counterclockwise until the engine achieves the desired idle speed. Verify the engine speed using the engine light or tachometer.

    4

Adjust the idle mixture screw---on one side only---until the engine reaches its maximum speed.

    5

Check the engine speed. If the action in Step 4 increased the rpm by 40, re-adjust the air screw until the engine reaches the desired idle speed.

    6

Adjust the other idle mixture screw until the engine achieves maximum speed.

    7

Turn the air screw to achieve desired idle speed.

    8

Turn each idle mixture screw with care to obtain the maximum engine speed.

    9

Make small clockwise turns of each idle mixture screw---alternating between both sides---until the engine speed decreases by 20 rpm, leaning the mixture to ideal street-use conditions.

    10

Reset the engine speed by turning the air screw.
