The Legend was a member of Hondas top-tier Acura line and available as a two-door coupe or four-door sedan. The 1991 Legend was a second-generation model, produced from 1991 to 1995. Powered by a 3.2-liter V-6 engine, the Legend has four-wheel independent MacPherson strut suspension and four-wheel disc brakes. The wheel bearings, integrated into the hub both front and rear are replaced as a unit.

Instructions

Removal

    1

Park the Legend on a level, paved surface. Use a flat-head screwdriver to pry the center cap from the wheel. The center cap has a notch in it for the screwdriver. Pry the hub cover from the hub with the flat-head screwdriver. Pry a little bit at a time, working your way around the cap. Remove the cap. If you are replacing both sides repeat for the other wheel.

    2

Place wheel chocks in front of the front wheels. Use a hammer and pointed punch to unstake the hub nut. The edge of the nut is staked or bent down into the notch in the spindle. You need to push the edge of the nut back up. Ask an assistant to hold down the brake pedal while you use a breaker bar and socket to loosen the spindle nut a few turns. You will remove the nut later. Loosen the lug nuts.

    3

Raise the rear of the Legend with a jack and support the vehicle with jack stands. Remove the lug nuts and wheels.

    4

Remove the two caliper bolts from the rear of the caliper with a ratchet and socket. Pull the caliper off the rotor and use a piece of wire to tie the caliper to the chassis. Do not let the caliper hang by its hose.

    5

Look for two small screws in the rotor. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove them. Pull the rotor from the hub. If the rotor will not come off, find the two threaded holes in the rotor and thread 8 mm x 1.25 x 12 mm bolts into the holes and tighten them a little at a time with a ratchet and socket to push the rotor off the hub.

    6

Use a ratchet and socket to finish removing the hub nut and washer. Pull the hub from the spindle. Wipe off the spindle with a shop rag.

Installation

    7

Slide a new hub onto the spindle. Install the washer and thread a new hub nut onto the spindle and snug it down with a ratchet and socket. You will torque it down later.

    8

Mount the rotor onto the hub. Install and tighten the two screws. Mount the caliper and install the two caliper bolts. Use a torque wrench and socket to torque the bolts to 28 foot-pounds.

    9

Mount the wheel and attach the lug nuts. Raise the Legend and remove the jack stands. Lower the car to the ground. Use a torque wrench and socket to torque the lug nuts to 80 foot-pounds. Torque the hub nut to 206 foot-pounds while an assistant pushes on the brake pedal.

    10

Stake the edge of the hub nut into the notch in the spindle with a hammer and small punch. You want to bend the rim of the nut into the groove like the old one. This locks the nut in place.

    11

Install the hub cover and tap it into place with a rubber mallet. Align the notch in the center cap with the notch in the wheel and push the cap onto the wheel.
